Dr. Newall specializes in breast augmentation, breast reduction and breast lift for women who are seeking surgical enhancements to their breasts.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation, or breast enlargement, is a surgical procedure technically referred to as breast augmentation mammoplasty. Women elect to have this surgery for various reasons, including to balance breasts that are unequal in size, to enhance the size of breasts perceived as small, or as a corrective surgery. Dr. Newall will determine the size of the implants that are best for you, depending on your body structure and your lifestyle.
During breast augmentation mammoplasty, breast implants are inserted under the breast tissue or the chest wall muscle, with small incisions being made in the crease under the breast or the nipple. After the implants are inserted, they are filled with a saline solution until the desired size and shape is attained.
Breast augmentation mammoplasty is generally performed as outpatient surgery under general anesthesia and is a two to three-hour procedure.
As with all surgical procedures, there are associated risks with breast augmentation mammoplasty, such as tightening of scar tissue, excessive bleeding or an increase or decrease in the sensitization of the nipple. Dr. Newall will review all concerns and risks with you prior to scheduling surgery.
Most breast augmentation patients can return to work five to six days following surgery, with sutures being removed seven to 10 days after surgery. You may be encouraged to wear a surgical support bra following the procedure and should be able to return to exercise and other activities one month after surgery.
Breast Reduction
Women whose breasts are large enough to cause them physical discomfort or health problems such as back and neck pain, skin irritation and/or breathing difficulties are candidates for breast reduction surgery. Most women who have this surgery do so for health-related issues instead of cosmetic purposes, and may be eligible for health insurance coverage for the surgery. Please check with your health insurance provider.
Dr. Newall will discuss all risks and benefits of the surgery with you prior to scheduling the procedure. All surgical operations do carry with them associated risks, and with breast reduction, these include bleeding, infection, increased or decreased sensitization of the nipples and scarring. Since the surgery requires that milk ducts leading to the nipples be removed, you may not be able to breast-feed following the procedure.
During breast reduction surgery, Dr. Newall will remove fat, tissue and excess skin from the breasts, not only decreasing their size, but also increasing their firmness. Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes three to five hours. Your recovery time will vary between seven to 10 days, and you should be able to return to work in about two weeks. You should avoid lifting and strenuous exercises for at least three to four weeks after surgery.
Breast Lift
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a procedure for women to provide a lift to sagging breasts, which is caused by such factors as aging and pregnancy. Women who are planning pregnancies may wish to postpone this procedure until after giving birth and breast feeding. Women who are considering having additional children should also wait to have the procedure, as an additional pregnancy will again result in sagging of the breasts.
During mastopexy, Dr. Newall will make an incision to remove excess skin from around the breast and will raise your nipple to a higher position. Sutures will be used after the procedure is complete. If you also are having breast implants inserted in addition to your breast lift, Dr. Newall will place the implant directly under the breast tissue or the chest wall.
Mastopexy is generally performed as outpatient surgery under general anesthesia, and the procedure lasts for approximately two to three hours. Most patients may return to work four to five days after their surgery.
