The three standard breast procedures are breast augmentation with implants, breast reduction, and breast lift or mastopexy.
The most common concern that women over 35 seek surgery for is sagging breasts. This can be treated with a breast list (mastopexy) or by implants alone, depending on the amount of breast tissue the patient has. Many patients, especially mothers, lose breast volume with age or as a result of breast feeding. If the patient has lost a lot of breast volume, they likely have excess skin with little breast tissue to fill it up. This type of “deflated” breast can usually be improved with a breast implant alone. This is an ideal solution because it leaves just a very tiny scar hidden in the inframammary crease. Here’s an example of how breast implants could fill and lift sagging breasts:
In other cases, patients have a significant amount of breast volume, but the skin has been stretched out over time and pulled down by gravity. These patients are ideal candidates for a breast lift or mastopexy. The breast lift leaves a scar extending from the bottom of the areola (nipple) to the crease below the breast. Here’s a before and after set of a mastopexy (breast lift):
It is also common for a patient to have a combination mastopexy and augmentation procedure – a breast lift with an implant. Here’s an before and after set of a combination breast lift with implants.
